아빠 친구중에 영어 잘하고, 연설문 써본 사람 있어? - 딸아이의 연설문

2010년 초등학교 졸업식때

 

어제, 큰딸내미 한테 채팅이 왔다.

 

큰놈 “아빠 친구중에 영어 잘하고, 연설문 써본 사람 있어?”

 

나 “아빠 있잖아 왜?”

 

큰놈 “아빠 우리 서로 잘 알잖아 왜 그래…”

 

음.. 할말 없다 –_-

 

딸내미 왈, 다음주에 학교 입학식 및 개학식을 하는데, 교장 선생님이 학생 대표로 교육의 중요성에 대해서 연설을 하라고 해서 연설문써야 하는데, 쓴 연설문을 누군가 리뷰를 해줬으면 좋겠다고 한다.

 

음.. 그런 일이라면 나의 절친 알랜이 딱일듯.. 일단, 써서 보내라고 했는데 오늘 메일이 왔다.

 

To the school administrators, faculty members, and my dear schoolmates. Good morning to you all. I would like to welcome all of you to the start of a new school year.

 

I am here to talk to you about the importance of education. What does education really mean? Is it about getting high scores in quizzes, being rank 1 in your class, or even entering a good university? It might be, but not really. Education is actually a means to discover new things and increase our knowledge about the world around us. It allows us to develop our own opinion and point of view in life. School, one of the basic foundations of education, teaches us to read, write, socialize, and so much more. Being educated doesn’t just mean that you posses the ability to add or subtract, it means you have the ability to differentiate right from wrong, good from bad. We don’t study for our grades, but for the knowledge we attain in the process. Without the things we learn, would we be able to go out to a bigger world and contribute even just a little to society? I don’t think so. A famous man named Nelson Mandela, who has been called both “the world’s most famous political prisoner” and “South Africa’s Great Black Hope”, once said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.

요렇게, 메일이 왔는데 사실 영어라고는 정식으로 배워 본적이 없고 오직 살아 남기 위한 생존 영어만 배우고 써본 나로서는 글의 뜻은 대강 알아도, 어떤 느낌을 주는 글인지, 문법이 맞는지 알 수가 없다.

한가지 확실 하게 알 수 있는건 연설문 치고는 무척이나 짧다는 거다.

일단, 친구 알랜에게 메일을 보내고, 딸내미에게 답장을 보냈다.

 

“연설문 받아 알랜 삼촌한테 보냈는데, 너무 짧은거 아니야?”

 

바로 답장이 왔다..

 

그러게 ㅋㅋ 읽어보니까 2분밖에 않되 ㅋㅋㅋ 근데 내가 연설 듣는 입장에서 생각해보니까 학교 첫날 긴팔입고 땀 뻘뻘 흘리면서 오랫동안 교육의 중요성에 대해 듣고싶지 않을거같아서 ㅋㅋ

 

음.. 학생의 입장에서는 큰 딸내미의 말이 맞는 것 같다.

 

어짜피 내가 해결해줄 순 없는 문제.. 이제, 알랜하고 알아서 하겠지.
